Rob Fulford provides a first-hand look at how he conducts the practices that have helped make Huntington Prep one of the basketball's elite prep schools in the country.
Coach Fulford details and demonstrates the many drills he uses to train and develop high school All Americans and turn them into more well rounded basketball players. You will see how a national power program balances individual skill and position work with team concepts and breakdowns. Combined with an off the court work out, Fulford gives you great insight into how to get the most out of your practice time.
Coach Fulford's practice is broken into three sessions that include individual skill development, strength and conditioning, and help-side defense.
Straight from the start, Coach Fulford's warm-up drills gets his team to focus on playing by concentrating on the tasks at a quick pace executed perfectly. His warm up goes from the "perfect lay up" into a three person full court short jumpers to 3 pointers and more. In these first 10 minutes they cover over 10 various shots they will get in from their offense in a game.
Offensively the team starts with individual skill development. The perimeter players work on a series of dribble drive moves from spots where this will occur in their offense. The post work on moves on the block and pick and roll actions and reads that incorporate seals and slips. As a team they run a pick and roll shooting drill, which Coach Fulford uses to work on their reactions, based on how the defense plays the roll. Fulford finishes off his first session using 5-vs-0 full court shell drill working to perfect their offensive sets. You get the opportunity to learn a new set that involves pick and roll action along with back door cuts.
In their second session, the Huntington Prep players go through an extensive strength and conditioning series where they use ladder drills to improve their stability, bands to improve mobility, and complete a six exercise strength circuit to help improve their strength do such exercises as Explosive Step-ups and Battle Rope. You get the chance to see how you can push your athletes during the middle of the season using the limited time and space you have available.
Coach Fulford finishes his third installment of his all access to demonstrate seven different drills that Huntington Prep uses daily to build their help side defense. Learn such skills as quick feet to get into help position and quickly recover out to your man with high hands. Coach uses a combination 4v4 change drill to emphasize quickly finding your man and closing out to the proper position in order to find the ball.
